The secretions ejected from the mouth in the act of spitting. It is composed of saliva, and of the mucus secreted by the mucous membrane of the nasal fossae and fauces, and often by the membrane of the larynx and bronchia. The sputa are, sometimes, called eru'ginous, when of a greenish-yellow colour; gummy, when they resemble a thick solution of gum; frothy, (F.) mousseux, when covered with froth; rubiginous, (F.) rubigineux ou rouilles, when of a reddish-yellow; and streaked, (F.) stries, when mixed with lines of blood. Also, saliva.
