(1733-1819), of Rhode Island, commanded the privateer "Gamecock" during the French War from 1759 to 1760. He headed the expedition which burned the "Gaspe" in Narragansett Bay in 1772. In 1775 he was placed in command of two Rhode Island vessels and fought one of the first naval engagements of the Revolution. In 1776 he commanded the "Providence," which captured more prizes than any other American vessel.
