A German dramatist; born in Leipsic, Jan. 21, 1811; died there, Sept. 26, 1873. His first comedy, "The Moss-Covered Pate" (1841), was received throughout Germany with extraordinary popular favor. Its successor, "Doctor Wasp", was no less successful. Of the long catalogue of his comedies, nearly every one was received with marked favor in Germany and in foreign countries wherever they were presented. The secret of this success is found in the ever lively action, and in the author's intimate knowledge of the stage with its immemorial yet ever fresh and telling effects. His "Collected Dramatic Works" were published in 27 volumes.
