An American novelist and poet; born in Calais, Me., April 3, 1835. Her literary success was assured with the publication of the story entitled "In a Cellar", in the Atlantic Monthly (1859). Among her seventeen books are: "Sir Rohan's Ghost" (1859); "The Amber Gods, and Other Stories" (1863); "Azarian: An Episode" (1863); "New England Legends" (1871); "The Thief in the Night" (1872); "The Marquis of Carabas" (1882); "Poems" (1882); "Ballads about Authors" (1888); "A Master Spirit"; "In Titian's Garden"; "Priscilla's Love Story"; "Old Washington".
