An American clergyman and philanthropist; born in Hanover, N. J., Feb. 17, 1806; died in Cambridge, Mass., Dec. 10, 1879. He was noted as secretary of the N. Y. State Prison Association in 1862, and afterwards devoted his life to the promotion of reform in the administration of criminal law and treatment of criminals. His writings include: "Two Years and a Half in the Navy" (1832); "A Trip to China" (1832); "Hints on Popular Education" (1838); "Commentaries on Laws of Ancient Hebrews" (1852); "Adam and Christ" (1855); "Prisons and Reformatories in the United States and Canada" (1867); "State of Prisons and Child-Saving Institutions" (1880.)
