A Greek poet; born at Gadara, Palestine; flourished about the middle of the first century B. C. He is best known as a writer of epigrams on love; and by his "Stephanos" (Garland), a compilation made up of short poems taken from the writings of some forty poets, alphabetically arranged, with an introduction in verse by himself. The best edition of his own poems, edited by Grafe, was published at Leipzig, 1811.
