Swelling of the OPTIC DISK, usually in association with increased intracranial pressure, characterized by hyperemia, blurring of the disk margins, microhemorrhages, blind spot enlargement, and engorgement of retinal veins. Syn.: apillitis. A condition observed in some cases of intracranial tumor, meningitis, and sinus thrombosis, in which the optic papilla projects decidedly above the level of the retina and there is edema, hemorrhage, and exudation of leukocytes, with, at times, acute inflammation. This may be followed by connective tissue hyperplasia with atrophy of the nerve fibers. See also optic neuritis.
