The dried sediment from the juice is the elaterium of the shops. (See Extractum Elaterii.) It is a most powerful cathartic, and, as such, has been used in dropsies. its active principle is the Elatin, Elaterin or Elaterium. Dose, gr. 1/4 to gr. J. until it operates.
