A muscle situate at the posterior part of the leg. It is broad, flat, and almost oval; and is attached, above, to the posterior edge of the fibula, to the oblique line on the posterior surface, and to the inner edge of the tibia. It terminates, below, by a large tendon, which unites to that of the gastrocnemius externus, to form the tendo Achillis. This muscle extends the foot on the leg, and conversely.
