(1704-1793), the most eminent of English judges, was Chief Justice of the King's Bench from 1756 to 1788. He maintained the right of Great Britain to tax the American colonies and was one of the most zealous opponents of the repeal of the Stamp Act. (See also Sommersett's Case.)
