The name originally given to the settlement which is now the city of Cincinnati, by its founders, Patterson, Denman and Filson, of New Jersey, who had purchased land from the Scioto Company in 1788. The name is compounded of "os," Latin for mouth; "anti," Greek for opposite; "ville," French for city; and "L," the initial of the Licking River. The name was changed in 1790.
