The original signification of this word is a matter of dispute. Some consider, with Mercurialis, that it meant physician to a prince, king, emperor, &c.; others, with C. Hoffmann, apply it to every physician who, by his situation, is raised above his colleagues. The former opinion seems to have prevailed- Archiatre des Rois de France being applied to the chief physician to the kings of France.
