A distinguished Norwegian historian, antiquary, and philologist; born at Christiania, Dec. 15, 1810; died at Rome, May 23, 1863. He was professor of history in the university at Christiania in 1841. His masterpiece was "History of the Norwegian People" (1851-64). ("Works", published by the State, 2d ed. Christiania, 1804.)
