A German novelist and satirist; born at Altona, July 26, 1799; died at Jena, Sept. 16, 1851. He was professor of modern languages at Weimar, 1826, and of modern languages and literature at Jena, 1832. He wrote "Pictures and Songs" (1840), "Natural History of the German Student" (2d ed. 1842), "Bubbles and Dreams" (1844), "The Minor His of Human Life" (1846), "History of the Novel" (2d ed. 1850), etc.; and edited "Treasury of National Poetry" (4th ed. 1853), "Treasury of German Prose" (11th ed. 1875), "The German People's Treasury of Poetry" (28th ed. 1884), etc.
