Hyperanthera moringa. A plant, Ord. Leguminosae, which affords the Ben nut, and the lignum nephriticum. It is also called Moringa Oleifera seu Zeylanica seu Nux ben. Under the name Guilandina moringa, Linnaeus is said to have confounded Moringa pterygosperma and M. aptera. Hyperanthera moringa is a synonyme of the former species. The nut Ben, Ben nux, Gians unguentaria, Balanus Myrepsica, Sandalum coernleum, Oily Acorn or Ben nut,is a West India nut which furnishes an oil, Oleum Balaninum, Oil of Ben, that does not become rancid by age, and is hence used by perfumers. It is purgative. The wood of the Guilandina is called Lignum Nephriticum, and has been used in decoction, in affections of the urinary organs.
