(1800-1880), was elected a U. S. Senator from Mississippi in 1847, and served till 1852, when he became Governor of the State and served till 1854. He was a zealous opponent of secession in the Southern convention at Knoxville in 1859, but served in the first two Confederate Congresses. He published " Texas and the Texans " and " The War of the Rebellion."
