A French novelist; born in Brest, 1777; died in Paris, 1828. Well born, accomplished, and brilliantly married, she was seized with the sentimental sickness of the day, and wrote "Ourika" (1823), the tale of a negress who fell in love with a white man; and "Edward" (1825), a novel in which it was the gentleman's turn to throw his heart in an indiscreet direction.
