An American Unitarian clergyman and scholar; born in Norfolk, Va., March 23, 1836. He has been professor of Hebrew at Harvard University since 1880. He has written: "History of the Religion of Israel" (1882); "Quotations in the New Testament" (1884); "Judaism and Christianity: Progress of Thought from the Old Testament to the New" (1890); "Commentary on Proverbs" (1889).
