(1810-1879), while pursuing the trade of a blacksmith, acquired proficiency in many languages. He established the Christian Citizen in 1842 in the interests of international peace, and the abolition of slavery. He was an ardent advocate of the compensated emancipation of slaves. He was U. S. Consul at Birmingham from 1865 to 1870. He wrote "Handbook of the Nations" and " Walks in the Black Country."
